May Day celebrated at YSU with concert

Youngstown State University will celebrate May Day on Thursday with a free outdoor concert featuring singer/songwriter Andy Grammer.The concert is set for 7 p.m. on the tennis/basketball courts, also known as Rec 5, outside Kilcawley Center. Gates open at 6:30 p.m. The event is sponsored by YSU Penguin Productions, the Department of Campus Recreation and Student Programming, Housing & Residence Life and the YSU Student Government Association. Admission and food are free to all YSU students with a valid ID. Grammer, who has appeared on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” is the main act. One of the opening bands will be The Strange Familiar, whose music is currently featured on mtvU and on the hit CW show “The Vampire Diaries.” The band’s drummer, Nicholas Sainato, is a YSU student.

A household hazardous-waste-collection drive will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 12 at the Canfield Fairgrounds.The Mahoning County Recycling Division will accept paints, automotive fluids, acids, stains, varnish, herbicides, pesticides, thinners, pool chemicals, photo chemicals and car batteries. Enter via Gate 9 from state Route 46. A tire-recycling drive will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. that day at the Lowellville Village Garage on West McGaffney Street.

GED testing

Official GED testing sponsored by the Choffin Career and Technical Adult Education Department will be at 8:45 a.m. May 15-16 at Choffin. All participants must be pre-registered and bring photo identification. To pre-register for the test or to enroll in free classes, call Choffin at 330-744-8715.

Baby-sitter training

Boardman Township Park is offering American Red Cross baby-sitter training from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. May 12. The class includes safety training, changing diapers, feeding a toddler and first instruction. The class is recommended for adolescents age 11 to 15. The cost is $45, and those who attend are asked to bring a lunch. To register, call the park at 330-965-0482.

Law Day Friday

LISBON

The Columbiana County Bar Association will sponsor Law Day Friday with the theme “Providing Justice Under Budget Constraints.” The program, scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m., will be on the second floor of the Columbiana County Courthouse, 105 S. Market St. A noon luncheon will follow at Lisbon United Methodist Church. Awards for the student essay competition, pro bono and Legal Aid will be presented.
