Youngstown woman gets doctor degree

Jazmine Marie Sutton, daughter of Jerry and Lynette Sutton of Youngstown, has received a doctor of medicine degree with special qualifications in biomedical research from Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University.

Dr. Sutton graduated from Chaney High School and received her bachelor’s degree in biological sciences from Duke University in 2004. In 2006, she was awarded a dean’s scholarship for full tuition to attend Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine.

Dr. Sutton will soon start her residency for internal medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, a Harvard University teaching hospital. After residency, she plans to specialize in hematology/oncology and focus her research on cancer disparities.

SCOUTS

Poland boy gets Eagle

Paul Heinrich Alberty, son of Paul and Maria Alberty of Poland, recently received his Eagle Scout Award at a court-of-honor ceremony at Poland Presbyterian Church.

He is a member of Troop 44 at the church, and his scoutmaster is Robert Zedaker. He joined Cub Scout Pack 44 in 2002. He crossed over to Boy Scout Troop 44 in 2005.

Paul has had the positions of quartermaster, assistant patrol leader, senior patrol leader, troop guide and has been a counselor at Seven Ranges Scout Reservation for several years.

He is a member of Order of the Arrow and achieved his Fifth-year Pipestone, a Seven Range Camp honors program award. He has earned 22 merit badges.

His Eagle Scout service project was to reconstruct three brick landings incorporated with a stairway of Yellow Creek Trail behind Poland Library leading up to the sidewalk path on U.S. Route 224. He planned, presented his project and obtained approval from Poland Village Council and secured materials and people needed to execute the project.

Paul is a senior at Poland Seminary High School, where he has been an honor-roll student for four years, lettered on the soccer team and is a member of symphonic band, speech and debate team, and participated in Model UN and the Poland Players Theater Group.

Outstanding troop

Girl Scout Troop 344 of McDonald received the Gold Level President’s Volunteer Service Award for outstanding community service. Friday at Roosevelt Elementary School in McDonald.

This past year, the troop served 1,293 hours helping others. The 2011 projects were: St. Jude’s Recycled Card Program, Project Linus for the Akron Children’s Hospital Beeghly Campus, Woodland Park United Methodist Church Replenishment Project, Adopt-a-Platoon Soldier Pen Pal Program, Veteran’s Day Cards for the Cleveland Veteran’s Hospital, Reverse Trick-or-Treat and Holiday Project at the Woodland Park Retirement Apartments, Make It Don’t Take It Card Project, National Emergency Responder’s Day Cards for McDonald EMT, Police and Firefighters, and Angel Tree Packages.

They 18 scouts also took up various product collections for Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley, Animal Welfare League, Angels for Animals, Goodwill Industries, Woodland Park United Methodist Church, USO, and Socks for Soldiers.

Candice Ward is Troop 344 leader. Assistant leaders are Lori Gillespie and Patricia Vilk-Worrell.
