Bayus enters finals as No. 1 qualifier

Defending champion Corey Bayus enters today’s finals of the Youngstown Junior Masters at Wedgewood as the No. 1 qualifier.

Based on 15 games rolled recently at McKinley, Holiday and Boardman, Bayus, a Struthers High senior, had 3,093 pins to lead a field of 20.

Eight boys are set for the finals at 3 p.m., when eight match play games in round-robin format begin. Thirty bonus pins will be given for games won. The top four advance to a stepladder finals segment to determine the champion. Bayus’ pick of pattern was a 43-footer named Dead Man’s Curve.

Other finalists are: Andrew Letscher (2963), David Clayton (2912), William Katko (2909), Kyle Condrik (2903), Eric Ferraro (2890), Jonathan Tiberio (2826) and Rickey Evans Jr. 2803.

The girls, led by Brittany Ferrara’s 2787, take to the lanes at 10 a.m.

Also in the finals are: Marissa Simon (2721), Fontaine McFeaters (2707), Morgan Alden (2673), Alexis Cloud (2596) and Kaitlyn Viglio (2469). Alden is defending champion; Simon is the reigning Warren Junior Masters champ. Cloud, a Girard High sophomore, was captain of the school’s team.

The girls will bowl six games of match play, with the top four surviving to a stepladder final before determining the champion.

Ferrara’s choice of oil was also the 43-foot sport pattern called Dead Man’s Curve.
