High school students interested in medicine and pharmacy careers can gain hands-on experience at Northeast Ohio Medical University.

Applications are open for two high-school programs, HealthSuccess and Pathways to Pharmacy.

HealthSuccess is a selective enrichment program designed to help prepare students in grades nine through 11 who are interested in studying medicine or pharmacy. Participation in HealthSuccess provides students with opportunities to explore careers in medicine and pharmacy; interact with medicine and pharmacy students, physicians, pharmacists and other health-care professionals.

Site visits to partner universities and hospitals will also occur throughout the program.

HealthSuccess programs are typically offered once a month, on Saturdays, September through May.

To be considered for participation in HealthSuccess, students must live in the greater Akron, Canton, Cleveland or Youngstown areas, must be enrolled in eighth through 10th grade, have a grade point average of 3.5 or better, and complete an application process.

Other consideration will be given to students who will be first-generation college students, as well as those from rural or urban environments that identify with a group that is racially/ethnically underrepresented in health-care professions.

Pathways to Pharmacy is designed to expose students from groups underrepresented in pharmacy to career of a pharmacist. The goal of the program is to expand student interest in the pharmacy profession and increase the number of students who graduate from high school and pursue pharmacy as a career through mentorship, enrichment programs and industry exposure.

The summer program offers work-based learning experiences, personal development workshops and math and science enrichment activities. Students will become familiar with basic pharmacy terminologies, gain understanding of the pharmacy profession and learn the necessary requirements to enroll in the College of Pharmacy.

The Pathways to Pharmacy Program will be July 23-27 on the NEOMED campus. Only current high school sophomores and juniors (at least age 16) with a minimum 3.0 GPA and at least a 90 percent school-attendance rate will be considered.

Application deadline for HealthSuccess is July 27, and application deadline for Pathways to Pharmacy is Friday.
