Suicide prevention workshop planned

YOUNGSTOWN

A workshop on the “Signs of Suicide,” focusing on older adults, is offered from 8 a.m. to noon May 11 at Our Lady Of Mt. Carmel Church, 343 Via Mt. Carmel Ave.

The registration fee is $20, which includes breakfast, until May 4 when the cost will increase to $25. Continuing-education units are offered to counselors, social workers and registered and licensed practical nurses. Agency display tables are $10. The featured speaker is Dr. Jules Rosen, chief of Geriatric Psychiatry Services at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

Free woman’s wellness event

Registration for Woman’s Heart Day, a free health and wellness event offered by Humility of Mary Health Partners, is under way. Woman’s Heart Day is 6:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 10 at the Covelli Centre. The annual event includes free health screenings, fitness demonstrations, educational presentations on a variety of women’s health issues, cooking demonstrations, refreshments and giveaways.

Among the health screenings offered are bone density, lipid panel (cholesterol) and glucose testing, arterial disease assessments, blood pressure readings, vision screenings, body-fat measurements and health-age assessments.

American Girl fashion show

Tickets area available for Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley’s American Girl Fashion Show on Saturday or Sunday at Stambaugh Auditorium in Youngstown. Performances are at 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. each day. Tickets are $30 per person and can be ordered by calling 330-746-8712.

Also a grand raffle hosted by The Kids’ Crew of Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley, will take place. Tickets are $5 each and can be obtained from any Kids’ Crew member or by calling 330-746-8712, which is also the number to call about raffle prizes.

Proceeds will benefit local programs and services of Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley.

A free workshop, “Introduction to Work Incentives and Ticket to Work” for transition-age students with disabilities is from 10 a.m. to noon May 5 in the Forker Laboratory at Penn State Shenango, Shenango Avenue. The workshop, presented by The Pennsylvania Training Partnership for People with Disabilities and Families and Penn State Shenango’s Office of Disability Services, is designed to provide individuals with disabilities and their families the facts on employment and the services and systems which are available to them. Program trainers will explain the basics of Work Incentives and the Ticket to Work program, the differences between Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Social Supplemental Security Income (SSI), cash and health benefits while you are working, benefit changes for people turning 18, and other available resources.
