Couple ordered to trial in son’s death

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A judge ordered a Philadelphia couple to stand trial in the death of their malnourished son after a medical examiner spent an hour recounting the numerous injuries the boy had when he died last month.

The medical examiner testified that 6-year-old Khalil Wimes had 15 visible scars on his face alone and his numerous other injuries that indicated he suffered frequent abuse before dying March 19. He weighed 29 pounds at the time of his death.

Wimes’ father, Latiff Hadi, and mother, Tina Cuffie, both faces charges of murder, aggravated assault and endangerment. Hadi also goes by the name Floyd Wimes.

Police say Cuffie admitted beating their son often and Hadi told investigators they didn’t take him to the doctor so the abuse wouldn’t be noticed.

Attorneys for Cuffie and Hadi say the boy’s death was not intentional.
