When developmentally disabled children have a hard time communicating, it can leave their parents struggling to know how they’re being treated at school.

In growing numbers, parents are turning to secret audio recordings to catch verbally abusive school employees.

The latest case came this week in New Jersey, when the father of an autistic 10-year-old released recordings that included an educator calling his son “a bastard.”

He raised the issue with school district officials in Cherry Hill, who say the employees heard on the recording made in February are no longer with the district.

The father, Stuart Chaifetz, says he’s gotten dozens of emails from parents in the last few days wanting to know how they can use an audio recording to confirm their suspicions that their children are being mistreated.
