2 permits issued for Trumbull, Columbiana county wells

Two new well permits have been issued by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, including the first for a horizontal well in Trumbull County.

CNX Gas Co. of Canonsburg, Pa., was granted a permit in Vienna Township in Trumbull County. It was issued April 16.

The well is off state Route 82 between Sodom Hutchings and Warner roads.

The other well permit was issued April 13 for a site in Hanover Township in Columbiana County to Oklahoma City-based Chesapeake Exploration LLC.

The well is off New Garden Avenue between the Eagle Pass golf course and Murray Road.

These are the 31st and 32nd horizontal-drilling permits issued for the tri-county area.

In Columbiana County, one well in West Township has been fracked, and two others are waiting to be fracked, according to ODNR records.

Fracking is the process in which water, chemicals and sand are blasted into rocks thousands of feet below the ground to unlock natural gas and oil.
