Charged in rape

Austintown

A Warren woman is charged in the rape of a 12-year-old girl. Police arrested Ashley Shubert, 25, of Niles Road, on a charge of rape Friday. The 12-year-old victim told police Shubert used to live in her Austintown neighborhood, according to a police report.

The victim’s mother filed a police report in Austintown on March 2, after officials at Austintown Middle School contacted her, saying her daughter was involved in several unwanted sexual encounters, the report said.

The victim told police the offenses had been ongoing and identified Shubert as the aggressor. Shubert was arraigned Monday on the rape charge in Mahoning County Area Court here. She will return to court for a pretrial hearing at a later date.

Hubbard

A hazardous-materials crew was called to the 200 block of Hager Street on Monday after a Waste Management garbage truck caught fire at 8 a.m. and leaked hydraulic fluid onto the street. The fire was out in about a half-hour. Police Chief James Taafe said the crew was removing the fluid from the storm sewers into the afternoon. The driver was uninjured.

The cleanup closed access to Hager Street between West Liberty Street and the scene of the spill, police said.
