No nor’easter for Mahoning Valley

Kids hoping for a day off from school shouldn’t plan to sleep in because the major snowstorm we were supposed to get isn’t coming.

Why? It was a lot warmer than weather forecasters had predicted.

When it’s warm, precipitation turns to rain — and the forecast doesn’t call for much of that, either.

It’s been a dry April with less than an inch of rain in the Mahoning Valley as of Monday afternoon.

The lack of April showers shouldn’t cause anyone to be concerned about May flowers, particularly with a chance of rain every day this week, except Friday.

Valley residents could wake up to an inch of snow, at most, and that’s only if the temperature drops, said John Mayers, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Cleveland.

Little to no snow is expected today, he said.

“Accumulations will be minimal, if any,” Mayers said.

“And there’s no snow in the forecast for the rest of the week with temperatures rebounding. Hopefully it’s the last of the snow for the area.”

On Sunday, meteorologists had predicted a major snowstorm of about a foot for Monday and today.

“It ended up being a lot warmer than we had anticipated, and that converts the precipitation from snow to rain,” Mayers said.

If the snow is done, the Valley had 56.5 inches for this past winter, about 2.1 inches above normal.

It’s nowhere near the previous winter, 2010-11, with a record 118.7 inches of snow.
