YOUNGSTOWN

After a flurry of weekend voting, the Youngstown-Warren metro area has moved into the Top 5 cities in a nationwide competition to win $1 million in food-assistance aid.

More than 2,500 votes were cast over the weekend to give the Mahoning Valley nearly 6,000 votes Sunday night and move it into fifth place, overtaking the Charlotte, N.C., area, which had a 2,000-vote lead over the Valley on Friday.

The campaign, called Fighting Hunger Together, is sponsored by Wal-Mart. Those wishing to vote for the area have until April 30, and one vote per person is allowed per day. To vote, visit the Walmart corporate Facebook page and click the logo, Fighting Hunger Together. The top winner receives $1 million in aid; the 20 runner-up cities receive $50,000 each.
