SCOUTS

Scott Charles Schilling, son of Scott and Marie Schilling, recently received his Eagle Scout Award at a court-of-honor ceremony at St. Michael Church, Canfield.

He is a member of Troop 115 at the church, and his scoutmaster is Andrew Welch. He was a member of Cub Scouts from 2002 through 2005 and received the Arrow of Light, Cub Scouting’s highest award.

Scott joined Troop 115 in March 2005 where he has held the positions of quartermaster, assistant patrol leader and patrol leader. He received the Catholic Church’s Boy Scout honor of Ad Altare Dei and Pope Pius XII awards and the Order of the Arrow. He earned 30 merit badges.

For his Eagle Scout service project, he planned, developed and coordinated with his troop members to complete a fire ring with stone seating behind St. Michael Social Center. It will be used by the church’s Generations of Faith group and the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts.

Scott is a senior at Canfield High School, where he has been a member of the hockey team for four years.

Mark Verostko, 18, son of Joseph and Susan Verostko of Hubbard, has received the Eagle Scout Award. The ceremony took place at the United Methodist Church in Hubbard in March.

At 6, Mark started as a Pack 100 member in Hubbard as a Tiger Club and achieved the Arrow of Light Award. He joined Boy Scout Troop 100 when he was 12.

He earned 21 merit badges, received the two-year Pipestone at Seven Ranges summer camp and has been to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. He also was a secretary of Wapashui Lodge and a brotherhood member of Order of the Arrow.

His Eagle Scout service project was to rebuild a wheelchair swing and sandbox for Fairhaven School in Niles.

Mark is a student at Trumbull Career & Technical Center, where he is in the architectural drafting program. He is a one-year letterman for Hubbard High School football team and a two-year track team letterman. He is a member of St. Patrick Church, Hubbard, and was part of their Senior Celebration Team this year.

John William Reedy, son of William and Elizabeth Reedy of Avon, Ind., recently received the Eagle Scout Award. His father formerly lived in Austintown, and his mother is a Salem native.

John has been involved in scouting since he was 8. He earned 33 merit badges and is currently senior patrol leader of Boy Scout Troop 395 in Brownsburg, Ind. He has received the Pope Pius XII religious emblem.

His Eagle Scout service project was to relocate and build a pedestrian bridge in Williams Park, Brownsburg. He led scouts and adults in the construction and completion of the job, which took more than 100 hours.

He is the grandson of Virginia Reedy of Austintown and the late Thomas F. Reedy and Pat McNicol of Salem and the late Francis McNicol.

Promotion

Brian M. Vail recently was promoted to the rank of sergeant by Col. John Born, Ohio State Highway Patrol superintendent.

Vail will transfer from his current assignment at the Canfield Post to serve as an assistant commander of the Ravenna Post.

Vail began his career in March 2001. He earned his commission in September of that year and was assigned to the Milan Post. In 2004, he transferred to the Hiram Post. In 2007, he transferred to his most-recent assignment at Canfield.

Vail lives in Austintown with his wife, Heather.
