Obama campaign opens Warren office

President Barack Obama’s re-election campaign will open a Warren office at 5:30 p.m. today at 155 S. Park Ave.

This is the 18th field office, including one in downtown Youngstown, for the campaign in Ohio. The office will serve as a hub for election activities.

Expected to attend the grand opening is Elaine Price, co-chairwoman of Organizing for America — Obama’s political organization — and OFA Ohio State Director Greg Schultz.

Police are trying to determine who robbed a 19-year-old city man of $10 at gunpoint as he walked in the area of Ohio and Benita avenues Thursday evening.

According to police, the man was walking just before 7 p.m. when he was approached by a male who lifted his shirt to reveal a gun and demanded the man’s possessions. Two other males walked up behind the man and directed him to do as the armed man said.

The men also attempted to rob a 54-year-old friend of the victim’s who lives in a nearby house but ran off when the resident yelled for someone to call police.

Ex-sheriff’s official freed from prison

Michael Budd, a former major in the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office, has been released from federal prison and is now housed at the Community Corrections Association Inc. in Youngstown.

Budd, 51, of Boardman, was found guilty at trial in 2005 of ordering the beating of inmate Tawhon Easterly, obstructing justice and personally roughing up two other inmates. He was sentenced to 97 months in prison.

Budd is housed at the CCA facility, but permitted to leave for work purposes. He may ultimately be placed on house arrest after he has established a viable address with CCA caseworkers.

Budd has been at the CCA since March 8. He will be released from CCA supervision Aug. 4.

Weed & Seed offers Safe Citizens event

The Youngstown Northside Weed and Seed program is offering a free Safe Citizens Workshop from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Arlington Heights Recreation Center, 801 Park Ave.

The workshop will give an overview on how to operate a neighborhood watch, how to collect and report specific information for law enforcement and how to reduce crime in neighborhoods.

Falling tree injures man in Hermitage

hermitage, pa.

A man was severely injured by a falling tree, Hermitage police said.

The accident happened around 4:20 p.m. Thursday in the 500 block of Robertson Road.

William R. Hughey III, 34, of Sharpsville, was taken to UPMC in Pittsburgh by helicopter after the tree, which was being cut down, fell on him, police said.

UPMC said Friday that Hughey was in critical condition.
