Covelli to open four restaurants

Covelli to open four restaurants

warren

Covelli Enterprises has announced it will open four restaurants on the Ohio Turnpike this fall.

The Warren-based company will open two Panera Bread restaurants and two DQ Grill and Chill restaurants within the same plazas on the turnpike.

The company has more than 200 Panera Bread restaurants. The DQ restaurants will be the first Covelli-owned-and-operated Dairy Queen franchises.

The restaurants will be at the Mahoning Valley and Glacier Hills plazas.

Covelli will hire 20 managers and will have open interviews in the coming weeks.

Open interviews for management positions will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 28 and May 5 at the Austintown Panera Bread on Mahoning Avenue.

Applications are being accepted online at www.panerabread.jobs.

The new restaurants also will require the hiring of more than 200 associates. Hiring will begin in June.

Rep. Hagan claims disrespect at hearing

COLUMBUS

State Rep. Robert Hagan of Youngstown, D-60th, who is pushing to temporarily ban deep-injection drilling in Ohio, says he and others concerned about a series of earthquakes in the Youngstown area are being disrespected in Statehouse hearings.

Hagan said in a statement Thursday that testimony on the moratorium bill he proposes was pushed past 9:30 p.m. Wednesday. He said Republicans, who control the chamber, were largely given preference in testifying first.

House Agriculture Chairman David Hall at one point gaveled Hagan out of order.

Hagan said the late hour prevented the public and news media from attending. He said only a handful of environmental activists who participated in a rally earlier Wednesday could stay for the hearing.

Starbucks to stop using ‘bug’ dye

NEW YORK

Starbucks Corp. says it will stop using a red dye in its drinks that is derived from crushed bugs.

The Seattle-based coffee chain said in a blog post on its website Thursday that it made the decision to reformulate its drinks after feedback from consumers prompted a “thorough” evaluation.

The company says it will swap out cochineal extract, which is made from the juice of a tiny beetle, and instead use lycopene, a tomato-based extract.

Cochineal dye is widely used in foods and cosmetics products such as lipstick, yogurt and shampoo.

Starbucks had used the coloring in its strawberry-flavored mixed drinks and foods such as the raspberry swirl cake and red velvet whoopie pie.

The company says the items will be reformulated by the end of June.
