Boardman girls track team drops Fed meet

On April 10, the Boardman girls track team traveled to Massillon Jackson for its second Federal League meet of the season and came away with a 99-38 loss to the Polar Bears.

“Only 21 out of 40 girls made the trip to Jackson due to some girls being gone for spring break and other family situations that came about,” said Boardman coavh Denise Gorski. “I give tremendous credit to the girls who competed this night because it was an ugly night of rain and cold temperatures.

“They really competed hard and were physically and mentally tough in some very adverse conditions. But we just didn’t have enough depth on this night to challenge them the way I thought we could.”

Junior thrower Giovanna Silvestri won the discus (107-4) and took second in the shot put (32-7) to lead the Spartans.

Senior Lesley Koch won the 200-meter dash in a season-best time of 27.04.

Sophomore distance runner Emma Schwendeman ran a 5:34.42 to win the 1600 and added a third (12:35.3) in the 3200. Freshman Jordan Grantonic won the 3200 with a time of 12:14.5 and freshman teammate Regan O’Hara was first in the 800 with a time of 2:37.28.

In the field events, sophomore Morgan Hambrick took second (4-10) in the high jump and junior Katrina Watkins placed third in the shot (30-2) and discus (93-9).

Senior Tori Moore ran 66.1 in the 400 to take third and sophomore Nikki Hillard placed third in the 200 (28.9).

Freshman Stephanie DeMain ran a 17.26 to take third in the 100 hurdles and freshman sprinter Heaton O’Hara placed third in the 800 with a 2:45.31.

Boardman will look to earn another Mahoning County championship today when it competes at the county meet at Fitch.
