Volunteers to be honored at Rescue Mission celebration

The Rescue Mission of Mahoning Valley will celebrate National Volunteer Week with an open house for current and past volunteers Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. in the dining hall of the Rescue Mission’s Resident Building, 962 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. No reservations are required.
Jim Echement, executive director, said the Rescue Mission could not function without its volunteers, who donate the equivalent of 20 full-time workers per month. Headache and vision wellness workshop

WellnessOne and Optiview Vision Centers are offering a free wellness workshop “Getting a handle on headaches” on Tuesday in the Niles area and May 1 in the Boardman-Canfield area.
There will be free vision information and tests, a nutrition specialist who will discuss foods, supplements and drugs that may cause headaches, and doctors who will provide information on how nerve and muscle interruptions or imbalances may cause headaches. For reservations, call 440-339-7889.
OCCHA health fair

The Organizacion Civica y Cultural Hispana Americana Inc. (OCCHA) annual health fair is April 25 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the OCCHA facility at 3660 Shirley Road.
The event, funded by the Ohio Commission on Minority Health, will include free testing for blood sugar, cholesterol, blood pressure, bone density and others. Participants should fast 8 to 10 hours before testing.
Red Cross seeks hero nominations

Red Cross of the Mahoning Valley is asking local residents to nominate individuals whose lifesaving actions are courageous and deserving of special recognition for its 2012 Acts of Courage Award.
The heroic event must have occurred between April 1, 2011, and April 1, 2012, and nominees must reside or be employed in Mahoning or Trumbull counties. The deadline for nominations is May 1. The recipients of the Acts of Courage Award will be honored during a dinner on June 14. Free educational arthritis seminar

Trumbull Memorial Hospital and the Arthritis Foundation, Great Lakes Region, Northeastern Ohio, are cosponsoring Better Living with Arthritis. The event, a free community seminar to raise awareness, educate and improve the lives of those with arthritis, is May 3 from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Magnuson Grand Hotel (the former Avalon Inn), 9519 East Market St., Howland.
Presentations include “New Advances in Knee Replacement Surgery” by Dr. Thomas B. Jones Jr.; Updates in Rheumatoid Arthritis, Dr. Fabio V. Ochoa; “Shoulder Arthritis and Total Shoulder Replacement,” Dr. Michael A. Jones; “Spinal Arthritis: Less Surgery is More,” Dr. Morris W. Pulliam; “What’s New at TMH,” Julia Ballas, registered nurse; and “Take Control—We Can Help,” Maribeth Curry of the Arthritis Foundation.
