Police chief: Residents need to secure homes

POLAND

After a three burglaries in the last year and an attempted burglary Thursday, village police are reminding residents to secure their home and notify police when they leave the home for several or more days.

Police chief Russell Beatty said the burglaries are clustered in the neighborhoods between College Street and Ohio Avenue. The most recent case occurred on Ohio Avenue, he said.

The first was at a College Street home where electronics and jewelry were taken, Beatty said.

Police recovered evidence from an attempted burglary about three weeks ago on College Street. A ladder and a pair of men’s wire-rim eyeglasses were recovered at the scene and sent to the state’s crime lab for testing, reports state.

“We think he used a ladder and at some point set an alarm off. We don’t know if he fell off the ladder or the roof,” Beatty said.

The chief said would-be burglars are deterred if doors are locked, alarms activated and lights are on in the house.

“If you call village hall and leave your address, we’ll add it to a list of houses that we check every shift,” he said.
