Overseer: Ohio Statehouse needs no metal detectors

COLUMBUS (AP) — The head of the board that maintains the Ohio Statehouse criticizes a proposal to study the facility’s security and says adding metal detectors would be an unnecessary and expensive burden.

The Columbus Dispatch reports Gov. John Kasich’s budget review proposes a Statehouse security study.

Chairman Richard Finan of the Capital Square Review and Advisory Board says lawmakers should eliminate that provision. The former Senate president told the House Finance Committee on Wednesday that there hasn’t been a problem with someone bringing weapons into the Statehouse.

Finan says the building has 110 cameras and monitoring by the Ohio State Highway Patrol. He says installing metal detectors would cost $1 million and limit entrances and deter schools from taking students to the Statehouse for tours.
