Church history

liberty

The Ethnic Heritage Society will sponsor a presentation on the history of St. Augustine’s Catholic Church, Youngstown’s only African American Catholic parish, at 10 a.m. Saturday at Kravitz’s Delicatessen, 3135 Belmont Ave.

The presentation will feature Beverly Blackshear, a one-time member of the parish, which operated on the city’s East Side between 1945 and 1958. She will be joined by Tom Welsh, EHS co-director, who has researched the church.

During the parish’s period of operation, it faced challenges including limited finances and a high turnover of pastors. Evidence suggests that its closure may have reflected diocesan leaders’ concerns about the maintenance of a segregated parish. St. Augustine’s Catholic Church should not be confused with St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church, a landmark on the city’s North Side since 1921.

Make reservations

BOARDMAN

Those who want to sell gently-used items at Boardman Park’s annual Baby Bargain Boutique can make a reservation beginning today at the park office.

Boutique sellers should offer usable baby, children’s and maternity clothing, books, furniture and other items related to children under age 5. The boutique is 9 a.m. to noon May 19.

The cost for Boardman residents to reserve an inside table is $20 and $15 for an outside location. Non-residents must pay $5 more than residents. Sellers who reserve an outdoor location have to bring their own table and may use a pop-up tent.

Table reservations are limited to two tables per person and must be made at the park office, which is open 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
