NYC man faces terror trial

NEW YORK (AP) — A man accused of plotting to attack the New York City subway system with homemade explosives is set to go on trial.

Adis Madunjanin has pleaded not guilty to federal charges stemming from the failed 2009 scheme. Opening statements are scheduled to begin today in federal court, Brooklyn.

Prosecutors have accused Madunjanin and two of his former high school classmates from Queens of traveling to Pakistan in 2008 to receive terror training from al-Qaida.

Medunjanin’s friends have admitted in guilty pleas that they wanted to become martyrs by joining a suicide attack on Manhattan subway lines. Both could end up testifying against Madunjanin.

Another possible witness is Bryant Neal Vinas. He’s a homegrown terrorist from Long Island who joined al-Qaida around the same time as the other men.
