Right Angle: After a so-so start to the spring, sophomore quarterback Patrick Angle finished strong, drawing raves for his performance in Friday’s Red-White game. Playing for the White team offense in the first half, he completed 7 of 14 passes for 94 yards and an interception. Six of those passes went to WR Andrew Williams as Angle showed off his arm strength on deep outs. “We’re excited about him,” YSU coach Eric Wolford said of Angle. “Pat’s a good football player. That’s why we recruited him. We really feel like when Pat’s in the game, we don’t expect to miss a beat.” Angle completed 4 of 8 for the Red with a TD in the second half. Third-stringer Dante Nania went 4 for 6 for 90 yards and a TD, which came on 29-yard throw to TE Nate Adams on a wheel route down the right sideline. “They always say you’re only as good as your second-team quarterback but I think we got three guys that can flat-out play,” Wolford said. “That position is becoming pretty deep.”
Shoring up the depth chart: While the coaches are confident they know at least five of the starters in defensive front seven, Wolford said they’re still sorting through the secondary. Returning starters Jeremey Edwards, a senior, and Josh Garner, a junior, got the start for the White at safety on Friday while two newcomers, sophomores Julius Childs and Brandon Neal, started at cornerback. “The secondary, it’s gonna be a judgment call,” Wolford said. “We had a couple nice hits, some tackles. We’ve got to ... keep working on it.”
Good crowd: Attendance was announced at 1,996 and there were probably a little more than 1,000 actually in the stands.
