An exhibition of photographs by Mike McCartney, brother of Paul McCartney, will come to the Mahoning Valley for exhibitions at the Butler Institute of American Art and its Trumbull branch.
The exhibit of about 30 photos, titled “North Highlands,” will run from July 13 to Sept. 2 at the Trumbull branch in Howland, and from Sept. 23 to Dec. 30 at the main museum in Youngstown.
Mike McCartney, 68, is the younger brother and only sibling of Paul McCartney, 70, songwriter and bass player for The Beatles and one of the most important figures of modern rock’n’roll.
Mike McCartney has taken many rock photos, but his exhibit coming to Youngstown consists of candid photos and street scenes in Scotland.
A photo book of the exhibit will be available for purchase at the exhibitions.
“He likes to photograph the average person in their environment,” said Kathy Earnhart, Butler spokesperson.
McCartney will be at the Trumbull branch all day on July 13 to greet the public and give a talk. He will also go to the main campus of Kent State University that day to teach a class.
Louis Zona, executive director of the museum, said McCartney is interested in the Amish community and might try to photograph it during his visit.
The Butler exhibitions are the only ones scheduled in the United States. Zona said the museum would be in charge of setting up a national tour of the exhibition if it so chooses.
In 1997-98, the Butler hosted an exhibit of art by Linda McCartney, Paul’s first wife. Linda took ill at the time and never visited the museum. She died in 1998.
Mike McCartney told Zona that when he told his brother that he was to have an exhibition at the Butler, Paul responded “that’s where Linda had her exhibit.”
