2 MCCTC students earn gold medals in competition

Students in the Early Childhood Development program at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center earned two Gold Medal first-place ratings after competing in the 2012 Family Career and Community Leaders of America Regional Skills Event.
The students competed in four categories: language and literacy, concept curriculum, teacher resource kit and early childhood team. With each of these categories the students had to research, develop and present lesson plans, activities and kits that met the state’s content standards for early childhood education.
Seniors KaLeisha Jones and Alisha Starkey, both from Boardman, earned Gold Medal first-place ratings in their events. Jones developed a teacher resource kit to teach preschoolers about nutrition and Starkey designed and presented a thematic unit about outer space for the concept curriculum development event.
These students also competed and earned high marks: Brittany Burkhart of Lowellville, silver medal, language and literacy; Sydney Nonnemacher of Springfield, silver medal, concept curriculum development; Morgan Claypoole of Springfield, silver medal, teacher resource kit; Janet Bernard of Austintown, Jesse Bigelow of Jackson-Milton and Cassie Wukotich of West Branch, silver medal, team event; and Gabrielle Elson of Canfield, Crystal Karnes of Struthers, Ashley Mayer of Austintown and Krystal Means of Jackson-Milton, bronze medal, team event.
