The green grass in the Wick Recreation Area was dotted with pastel eggs on March 31 as Mill Creek Park hosted its annual Easter Eggstravaganza egg hunt.
Officials at Mill Creek planned some egg fun for children and their parents, but entertainment for the young ones came first as local kids ages 2 to 10 lined up at three separate egg hunt enclosures.
Austintown resident Frank Pugliese stood by with his son, Nicholas, and his friend, Brody Herman, and watched as the kids eyed some of the prizes.
“They want the inflatable bunnies, but I told them that dad gets to have the chocolate,” he said with a laugh.
Over at the 6 to 10-year-old hunt, Austintown neighbors Christy DeBaldo and Amy Herman prepared their group of six for the hunt.
“We all live on the same block out in Austintown — the kids are all friends and love to hang out together. I think the friendships might be put on pause for a few moments though in the thick of the egg hunt,” said DeBaldo.
At 11:30 a.m. on the dot, the Mill Creek officials yelled “Go!” and the hunt was on. Kids came away with candies and the inflatable bunnies that were the hot-ticket item.
Josie Skruk of Austintown certainly was happy she nabbed one.
“The bunnies are the best. I didn’t even want any candy — just this,” she said.
After the hunt, guests collected special prizes offered by Mill Creek officials and then met with the Easter Bunny. Adult duos participated in a raw egg toss, and after each pitch, one of the pair had to move a few steps backward. Two very resilient eggs survived a handful of tosses that were about 20 feet long, until Liberty residents Keith Romain and his son, Brennan, were crowned champions. Brennan received a large bag of M&Ms.
Boardman resident Rachel Anderson enjoyed the event with her family.
“We try and come every year. The kids really love the candy, and I like the entertainment,” she said.
