NEW SPRINGFIELD

Four-way stop signs will be installed Monday at the intersection of Sandy Court and Midway in the Carousel Corners development off Calla Road.

Township Road Superintendent Rich Kennedy told trustees Wednesday night that residents have been requesting the intersection be changed from a two-way stop for years after many near crashes, although only one accident occurred in the last few years.

The area has many walkers and a 25 mph speed limit. Signs also will inform motorists that a new stop is ahead.

Also at Wednesday’s meeting, trustees awarded the contract for repaving Macklin Road from Garfield Road to the Columbiana County line to Butch and McCree of Hillsville, who submitted the low bid of $91,420.

Other bidders included Diorio Paving of Girard, $81.19 per ton, no total specified; Barbakus, Akron, $100,540; R.T. Vernal Paving, North Lima, $94,553; and Shelly and Sands, Akron, $96,000.

Township officials also will meet with representatives of the Chesapeake Co., a drilling company, to make a road-use maintenance agreement.

The “RUMA,” required by Mahoning County, will determine the current state of Felger Road, take core samples, then make provisions to upgrade and maintain it so it can bear the weight of gas and oil drilling equipment that will be transported across it.

Police Chief Matthew Mohn reported that training of the township’s new police dog has begun.

He thanked Waste Management for a $500 donation to the canine unit, which is being paid for by fundraising and donations.

Mohn also reported residents can bring unwanted medications and expired drugs, no questions asked, to the township building from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 28.

Trustees agreed to spend up to $15,000 for a used John Deere grader they intend to purchase from DU Construction once their mechanic inspects it.

The township’s annual cleanup will be April 21, and John Campbell of Waste Management said the facility will be open from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. that day for residents to dispose of items for free.

Fliers about the cleanup will be sent out.
