Weekend mayhem keeps city cops busy
YOUNGSTOWN
Shootings, fights, robberies and a home invasion were part of Youngstown’s weekend police calls.
Police are still trying to determine who fired shots Saturday on the city’s North Side, sending four people to the hospital with gunshot wounds. Three victims ranging in age from 18 to 24 were taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center. A 22-year-old man was treated at ValleyCare Northside Medical Center.
According to police reports, officers were investigating a disturbance call on Hanley Avenue early Saturday when they were called away to the area of Logan and Tacoma Avenues for a shooting. When officers arrived, there were no victims present, but officers did find an abandoned black Buick with the engine running in Logan Avenue. Inside the car was an opened box of Winchester ammunition. Two pairs of shoes and a baseball cap were found in the street.
Police learned a short time later that four people had been taken to area hospitals with gunshot wounds. None of the victims could speak to police and give details as to what led up to the shooting.
A short time later Saturday morning, police were called to Saranac Avenue for heavy gunfire. When officers arrived they discovered about two dozen shell casings in the street and on the sidewalk.
A resident living in the area told police he heard loud banging near his property at the time of the shooting.
In another Saturday shooting, a 26-year-old Midland Avenue man told police he woke up to find a bullet hole in his leg, but has no idea how it got there.
The shooting victim told police he went to an unknown bar on Mahoning Avenue on Friday, but does not remember much after that. The man said he awoke Saturday to find himself covered in blood. He said he took a shower to remove the blood and discovered the bullet hole in his left thigh.
A 29-year-old Marmion Avenue man told police he was hit in the head with a log during a fight on Cambridge Avenue just before 3 p.m. Saturday.
The man said he went to visit a female friend and got into an argument with another man who was at the house. He said the other pulled a knife, but he was able to disarm the man. The woman then hit him in the head with a log.
Police, in another matter, are looking for the man who struck a 22-year-old man over the head with a gun and took his watch, jewelry and cellphone in the 2600 block of Market Street at about 3 p.m. Sunday. The man said the other man, who is known to him, hit him in the head with the gun as he stood in the parking lot.
Police are also looking for the group of people who kicked in a woman’s door in the 700 block of East Lucius late Friday. The woman said she was home with her three children when she heard someone kick in the door and enter the house. The woman started yelling and the intruders ran.
Police found a size 11 Converse shoe print where the door was kicked in. There were also reports of two males running through backyards immediately after the incident.
