Furnace explosion

WARREN

An explosion sent coke out of the blast furnace at RG Steel at 5:30 a.m. Monday and into a large steel trash container.

The coke caused a fire in the trash container which had to be extinguished by firefighters, but there were no injuries, said Bette Kovach, an RG Steel spokeswoman. Coke is a solid carbon fuel and carbon source used in steelmaking.

A spokesman at the Warren Township Fire Department said firefighters responded to the fire in the trash container, but the department had no other information on it. The explosion was expected to put the blast furnace out of commission until about 5 p.m. or 6 p.m. Monday, but no disruption of the mill’s production schedule was expected to result, Kovach said.
