1865: Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee surrenders his army to Union Gen. Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House in Virginia.

1939: Singer Marian Anderson performs a concert at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., after being denied the use of Constitution Hall by the Daughters of the American Revolution.

1959: NASA presents its first seven astronauts: Scott Carpenter, Gordon Cooper, John Glenn, Gus Grissom, Wally Schirra, Alan Shepard and Donald Slayton.

1962: “West Side Story” wins the Academy Award for Best Picture of 1961.

1987: The Republican Party in Youngstown could fade into oblivion if it fails to retain its 7th Ward seat and doesn’t pick up any other offices in the 1987 municipal election, says Mahoning County Party Chairman Dr. William Binning.

1972: In a sharp upturn, the Mahoning County Welfare Department adds 305 cases with 849people in March to set a Mahoning County record of 9,027 cases and 19,292 people.

Cortland’s Brian Job, swimming for the Santa Clara Swim Club, sets a record of 2:02.36 in the 200-yard breaststroke during an AAU meet in Dallas.

1962: State agents cite three bars, one in Warren, one in Howland and one in Youngstown, for Sunday sale of beer.

Stephen R. Vrabel, son of Police Sgt. and Mrs. Stephen Vrabel of 739 E. Dewey Ave., is commissioned an ensign in the U.S. Naval Reserve after completing officer candidate school at Pensacola Air Station.

1937: Youngstown Municipal Judge Peter Mulholland quietly handles the case of Michael J. Saffron, charged with keeping slot machines at the Army and Navy Union club at 118 Boardman Street, fining him $5. Saffron’s case was handled by Mullholland, even though Judge John W. Powers was sitting on the criminal bench.

Mrs. Julia Holmes is arrested after she unloaded a pistol at deputies and constables removing furniture from the Boardman-Poland Road home from which she was being evicted. Two bullets grazed Deputy Frank French and one struck the arm of Elmer Barger, sending him to the hospital.
