The cold, gray skies of winter are hopefully in the past and the green grass and blue skies of spring are a common sight. Farmers in this part of the country are busy preparing fields and planting crops, and the Amish are no exception.

According to the Lawrence County Tourist Promotion Agency, 1,500 Old Order Amish live in the New Wilmington and Volant, Pa., areas, and many are involved in agriculture or dairy farming.

A recent spring day in Lawrence County’s Amish country found farms buzzing with activity. Freshly tilled soil punctuated the landscape while the clip-clop sound of horse-drawn buggy traffic filled the air.

Farmers using traditional horse-drawn teams were working their fields and planting crops. Dotting the pastures were the white shapes of ewes and their new spring lambs.

Closer to home around the farmhouses, Amish women and children were busy washing windows and cutting grass while laundry hung out to dry on backyard clotheslines.
