Donko pitches no-hitter; Irish and Springfield split

STRUTHERS

Sam Donko threw a no-hitter, walked one and struck out 12 as the Ursuline High baseball team defeated Springfield, 4-2, on Saturday at Cene Park.

Donko also had the only three hits of the game.

Nick Russell struck out 14 as Springfield won, 10-4, to split the doubleheader.

Matt Chicase had three hits and drove in three runs and Ryan Kohler had two hits and drove in two for the Tigers (5-2).

Ralph Naples and Paul Pegues had two hits for Ursuline (5-2).

Struthers 5-10, LaBrae 0-8

STRUTHERS

Roman Salinas (2-1) tossed at two-hit shutout for the Wildcats (6-2), striking out eight batters at Cene Park.

His two hits drove in three runs. Dylan Duchek doubled.

In the second game, Joe Wilaj hit a two-out single in the seventh inning to score the winning run.

Wilaj’s three hits included a triple.

Anthony Lariccia (1-0) tossed three shutout innings to pick up the victory and contributed a triple.

Duchek had three hits while Salinas’ two hits included a double.

For the Vikings (3-6), Peyton Aldridge had two hits.

Girard 7-5, Southeast 4-8

RAVENNA

In the opener, A.J. Devore had two hits and two RBIs and Dominic Aurillo added a double and an RBI for the Indians, who took a 7-0 lead after four innings.

Santana Barrera doubled and singled for Southeast.

In the second game, Barrera had three hits and an RBI and Zach Morgan doubled and drove in two for the Pirates (3-4).

Dan Graziano, Jim Melfi, Nick Malvasi and Jim Standohar each had two hits for Girard (8-3).

Mathews 7, Badger 2

VIENNA

Jeremy Fumerola, Jeremy Forsythe, Dom Ditommaso and Tim Gealy all had a double for Mathews.

Brandon Cretor had five strikeouts in three innings.

Badger had just two three hits, but Jared Meikel went 2-for-4.

West Branch 13, Western Reserve 2

BERLIN CENTER

Ryan Adams went 3-for-3 with a triple and two runs scored, while Kip DeShields and Brenden Wells had two hits for the Warriors (4-4).

DeShields also had a triple and Jeff Vizzuso knocked a double.

West Branch scored 13 runs on 11 hits, and 11 runs came in the fourth inning.

Tristan Bova had a triple for Western Reserve (3-5).

Niles 20, East 0

NILES

Gage McCracken struck out five batters in three innings for Niles.

The Dragons tallied 15 hits, while the Panthers had two.

Boardman 2-7, Eastlake North 1-6

BOARDMAN

Cameron Rodgers and Donnie Krapofil had an RBI each for Boardman. Aaron Bill picked up the win and had three strikeouts.

In game two, Rodgers went 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs, while Danny Watkins went 2-for-3 and had a double. Phil DiIanni scored twice for the Spartans (5-2).

Mooney 15, Akron Firestone 2

AKRON

Denver Martin had three hits and an RBI, Frank Rondinelli had two hits and three RBIs, Pat Markovich had two hits and two RBIs, Nick Buffa tripled and Drew Delsignore and Dan D’Andrea doubled for Mooney, which took a 9-0 lead after five innings.

For Firestone, Dan Merweiler had four hits and Pat McIntyre tripled.

SOFTBALL

Struthers 11-2, LaBrae 0-8

LEAVITTSBURG

In the first game, Rachel Affagato pitched a four-hitter with seven strikeouts and no walks to lead Struthers.

Affagato and Jessica Ditman added two hits, Katie Jordan homered and Hannah Dubec tripled.

In the nightcap, Emily Dugan (six inning, four strikeouts, three walks) and Kathlyn Dieter combined on a three-hitter for LaBrae (5-2).

Jessica Buck had two hits, Linday Moon doubled and Taylor Smith.

Girard 6, Cardinal Mooney 0

BOARDMAN

Bryanna Jay and Nico Maderitz hit home runs, with two and three RBIs, respectively, for Girard (7-3).

Kylie Kulan had a double.

On the mound, Maderitz allowed just one hit and struck out 11 Cardinals.

Marissa Gorvet had the lone hit for Mooney (1-8).

East Palestine 22-11, East Liverpool 0-0

East Palestine

Junior starter Karly Pence pitched hitless ball for 31/3 innings before Carly Blair gave up a triple in the fifth.

Blair, a senior, had four hits including a three-run homer and she knocked in five runs, Pence had four hits and four RBIs and junior Logan Gatchel had four hits and two RBIs.

Kelsey Diddle tripled for the Potters.

In the second game, Karly Pence struck out eight but allowed a single in the second inning, before Carly Blair struck out two during a two-inning relief appearance.

Pence, Logan Gatchel and seniors Nicole Kiehl and Desiree Walker all had two hits for East Palestine (8-1).

Katie George had Liverpool’s lone hit, a single in the second inning.
