Contract awarded for Rayen stadium

youngstown

The city school board has awarded the contract for the Rayen Stadium renovation to Brock Builders of Boardman.

The company’s $3,051,770 bid was the lowest of the three considered for the project.

The project, which is to be complete in time for an East High School football game in late August, will give city school students a home field, something that’s been lacking since 1993.

A fundraising campaign is under way to raise money for the project. Information about contributing funds or construction services is available online at www.rayenstadium.org or from the Rayen Stadium information line, at 330-740-8773. Contributions also may be made by checks to the Rayen Stadium Renovation Fund mailed to Youngstown City School District, Rayen Stadium Renovation Fund, P.O. Box 550, Youngstown, OH 44501-0550.

Assault case closed

BOARDMAN

Police have determined an allegation of a March 27 assault at Boardman High School to be unfounded, and the case is now closed.

A parent had reported his 17-year-old daughter was assaulted by a female student while in a class about noon when a teacher was not present, but Boardman Detective Sgt. Chuck Hillman said the parent and school officials said initial information was wrong.

Hillman said it was determined the 17-year-old girl was engaged in horseplay and that the teacher was present during the incident.

“The parent did not speak to the school first in this case and later found he had inaccurate information,” Hillman said. “I advise all parents to speak to the school first before calling police.”

Defendant ruled incompetent

Youngstown

William Bednar, the 55-year-old homeless man who reportedly killed two German shepherd puppies and left their carcasses downtown, was deemed not competent to face trial at a hearing Thursday.

Youngstown Municipal Judge Elizabeth Kobly ordered Bednar to be transported to Heartland Behavioral Health Services in Massilion for rehabilitation.

Bednar is accused of strangling two German shepherd puppies and leaving their carcasses in the boulevard in front of the Western Reserve Transit Authority on West Federal Street in January.

He was charged in February with two felony counts of abuse to companion animals. He has been convicted twice before on charges involving abuse to dogs.
