BGMS track team tops Howland
The Glenwood girls track team defeated Howland 44.5-44 to open its season. Elly Larrier took first in the 800 and 1600. The 4x100 relay team, consisting of Lauren Pavlansky, Caitlyn Conner, Logan Vitchell and Arianna Cuevas, took first place. The 4x200 team, including Katie Platt, Conner, Krista Johnson and Cuevas, placed first as well. Mitchell, Larrier, Johnson and Platt took first in the 4x400 relay and Bailey Brandt won the shot put. Johnson placed first in the long jump.
The Lady Spartans are coached by Dave Nypaver and Lauren Susany.
The Boardman Glenwood boys track team defeated Howland 70-31. AJ Pantaleo was a leading scorer for Glenwood taking first in the 100 and 200-meter hurdles. Dylan Bel took first in the 400, Matt Perham won the 800 and Tim Captain took first in the 200.
The following relays took first place: the 4x100 (Mike Micchum, Tyler Dempsey, Mike Parise and Bal); the 4x200 (Drew Wagner, Parise, Captain and Dempsey); and the 4x400 (Bal, Wagner, Captain and Mike Vidmar).
Devin Curd won discus, while Alec Zizzo took first in long jump and high jump. The boys team is coached by Eric Diefenderfer and Scott Lenhart.
Girls softball defeats Howland
The Boardman girls softball team defeated Howland 2-1. Sabrina Marshall drove in Gianna Marinucci with a tying run and Caitlyn Andrew had a RBI-double to win the game.
Nicola Gabriele pitched for the Spartans and earned the victory, giving up only three hits and striking out seven.
Boardman hitters beat Mooney
The Boardman girls softball team defeated Mooney 3-0. Nicola Gabriele earned her second win by striking out eight and only allowing seven hits. Cina had three hits and Jones, Alex DeFabio and Melissa Maiorano had two hits each.
Girls softball lose to Champion
The Boardman girls softball team lost to Champion 1-0. The Spartans played an outstanding defensive game and pitched well, but were unable to generate any offensive effort against one of the best pitchers in the state of Ohio.
Not to be outdone, the Spartans Nicola Gabriele kept the Flashes hitters in check, only allowing a single run and giving the Spartans a chance.
Girls softball takes on Sharon
The Boardman girls softball team defeated Sharon 9-0. Boardman pitcher Nicola Gabriele notched the win by throwing a two-hit, 16-strikeout performance against the Tigers.
The Lady Spartans pounded out 18 hits in an outstanding offensive performance.
In the fourth, the Lady Spartans erupted with two outs via seven straight hits from Megan Jones, Tara Amero, Nicola Gabriele, Alex DeFabio, Melissa Maiorano, Kayleigh Huck and Caitlyn Andrews. Boardman scored six runs in the inning, which proved to be more than enough.

Boardman native cares for athletes
Dr. Andrew Schmutz continued his commitment to USA Swimming at the Columbus Grand Prix held on campus at The Ohio State University from March 9-11. He was responsible for the care of 22 members of the U.S. National Team at the event. Among the National Team members was 11-time Olympic medalist Natalie Coughlin.
Schmutz operates The Chiropractic and Sports Therapy Center LLC, located in Struthers.
Watterson is national bowling qualifier
Boardman graduate Andrew Watterson, a member of the Moorehead State (Ky.) squad, was runner-up at the sectional bowling tournament in Smyrna, Tenn.
He qualified with his team to advance to nationals in Nebraska in April. This is the second consecutive year he advanced to nationals with his team.
Stambaugh Golf Course open for play
City-owned Henry Stambaugh Golf Course on Gypsy Lane is now open for play.
Discount rates are available weekdays between 8 a.m. and noon. Membership and discount books can be purchased at the park and recreation office at city hall through Friday or at the course beginning Monday. Call 330-742-8713.
Drennan to speak in Valley
Bruce Drennan from All Bets Are Off on Sports Time Ohio will be the guest speaker at the Curbstone Coaches Hall of Fame Banquet.
The event will be held at Mr. Anthony’s Banquet Center on May 6 beginning at 6 p.m. For tickets, call Ed Fowler at 330-506-9829.
