Boardman runners break school records


The Boardman boys team improved its 2012 record to 4-0 with a victory over Dover, Marietta and Mansfield Madison at the Dover Mini Relays last Friday.

The Spartans set two new school records at the meet. First, the distance medley team of junior Sam Sheronovich, senior Dayne Hammond, sophomore Alan Burns and sophomore Mark Hadley set the new mark at 10:43.6, shattering the 2006 record set by Matt Moore, Frank Ocasio, Jake Lape and Rick Lape.

The other new record set was in the sprint medley by the team of senior Devin Campbell, sophomore Turel Thompson, senior Darel Green and senior Dayne Hammond in a time of 1:37.2. That mark bested a record set in 1991 by the team of Sean Banks, Dan Spires, Martin Lesniak and Ted Huziak by just .4 seconds.

The Spartans also won the discus relay with the team of sophomore Mike Sferra, senior Mike Grantonic and senior Brian Linsley; the shot put relay with the team of Grantonic, Linsley and senior John Kuczek; and the high jump relay with the team of sophomore Jeff Bean, sophomore Isaiah Lyle and senior Allen Starkey.

Boardman was victorious in the low shuttle hurdle relay with the team of senior Mike Moxley, junior Will Birchfield, Starkey and Bean.

In the 4x100 meter relay, the Spartans team of sophomore Ivan Adu-Poku, sophomore Brian Bodrick, Thompson and Campbell improved an entire second from their previous outing against GlenOak with a time 43.7 seconds. Boardman also bested the competition in the 4x200 meter relay with the team of senior Darel Green, Adu-Poku, Bodrick and Moxley with a time of 1:32.5.

The Spartans also won the 4x800 meter relay with the team of Burns, Sheronovich, Hadley and sophomore Justin Maroni.

GIRLS TEAM

The Boardman girls track and field team remained undefeated after defeating Federal League rival Canton GlenOak 77-60 in a dual meet March 28.

The Spartans began the meet with a victory by the 4x800 meter relay team, consisting of junior Audrey Keleman, freshman Regan O’Hara, and sophomores Brandi Gatte and Trista Cunningham.

Junior Lauren Davila (17.1) and freshman Hope Landers (17.4) took second and third. respectively in the 100 hurdles. Freshman Jordan Grantonic won the 1600 in 5:42.6 and sophomore teammate Emma Schwendeman was second in 5:44.2.

In the high jump, sophomore Morgan Hambrick placed second with her season-best of 4-10 and in the 400, senior Tori Moore raced to second in a season-best of 63.5. Freshman teammate Heaton O’Hara was third in 64.4.

Junior Sarina Mauerman won the pole vault with a leap of 9-0 and senior teammate Jenny Bresnahan was third (7-6).

Landers was second in the 300 hurdles in a season-best time of 53.1.

Boardman finished first and third in the 800, as Regan O’Hara won in 2:37.1 and Cunningham was third (2:37.5). Sophomore Nikki Hillard jumped 15-0 to win the long jump and Davila went 14-11 to take second.

Junior Giovanna Silvestri won the shot put with a heave of 35-6 æ. Hillard placed second in the 200 with a season-best time of 28.0.

Boardman swept the top three spots in the 3200, as Grantonic won in 12:07.2, Schwendeman was second (12:10.4) and junior Daisy Corso took third (12:58.3).

Junior Katrina Watkins won the discus with a season-best toss of 104-8 and Silvestri was third (100-0).

Boardman’s 4X400 relay team posted a time of 4:19.6 to win the event. The team included Heaton O’Hara, Cunningham, Regan O’Hara, and Moore.
