Students from Austintown Middle School showed their prowess throughout many disciplines during the annual Cultural Arts and Science Fair on March 22.

The event offered families of AMS students the chance to browse through the displays of sixth-grade science projects, as well as enjoy a night of performances from AMS singers, dancers and musicians. Winners from the fair’s art contest on the theme of “Falcon Pride” were also on display.

The sixth-grade science fair projects spanned lines of tables in the two gyms at AMS.

AMS student E’moni Davis tested different types of milk to see which would go sour first. The project earned her a fourth-place honorable mention ribbon.

“At the beginning of the project, I thought that they’re all milk, so they would go bad at the same rate. Actually, whole milk went bad faster, because there is more lactose in that type,” Davis explained of her project.

Over in the school’s auditorium, AMS students celebrated the cultural arts with an evening of performances.

AMS PTA member Ellen DiFrancesco helped organize the evening’s talent.

“Last year, we ran a bit low on performances. This time around, sixth-graders were very excited about having a chance to take the stage and we reached about 35 performances. The PTA loves to provide as many opportunities as possible for students to perform in from of their peers and the public,” DiFrancesco said.

PTA event chair Randee Pipe said she hopes to see the Cultural Arts and Science Fair continue to grow.

“Our ultimate goal is involvement. Many teachers get to see how students are creative outside of the classroom, and parents get to peer into their student’s life at school. In the years ahead, we hope to keep expanding and adding many different types of performance and art to the event,” she said.
