UAW locals seek hiring of 150 at GM Lordstown

Staff report

LORDSTOWN

Local unions at the General Motors Co. Lordstown plant plan to hire at least 150 employees in an effort to fill the void left by transfer workers who have returned to their home plants.

The management of United Auto Workers Local 1112 has asked GM to allow for the addition of 120 employees, according to a shop flier acquired by The Vindicator.

Jim Graham, president of UAW Local 1112, declined to comment on the possible new hires until “things are confirmed.”

Those openings will be filled by UAW members from across the country who request a transfer to the Lordstown plant.

If there are not enough volunteers to fill the openings, current temporary or flex (part-time) employees will have the opportunity to move to full-time status. Those temporary or flex positions will be filled by new temporary and flex employees.

UAW Local 1714, at the fabricating plant, has requested an additional 30 employees.

President Dave Green said Wednesday the plant has added 26 employees to fill vacancies so far this week.

UAW Local 1112’s shop flier also detailed GM’s plan for hiring temporary employees on a full-time basis.

Based on the last date of temporary hire, a worker can achieve seniority by working 90 days during six consecutive months.

If a worker is relieved of his or her temporary duties or does not meet the working requirements, his or her “clock” starts over.

If there are not enough workers who meet full-time requirements, those positions will be filled by temporary or flex workers.
