METRO DIGEST || Pee-Wee football murder appeal dismissed

Appeal dismissed

COLUMBUS

The Ohio Supreme Court has refused to hear Anthony Caulton’s appeal of his murder conviction in the Aug. 19, 2006, shooting death of Larry D. Jones during a pee-wee football game attended by some 500 people at the former South High School stadium in Youngstown.

The top court’s Wednesday announcement that it would not accept the case for review and was dismissing the appeal follows a unanimous December decision by a three-judge panel of the 7th District Court of Appeals, which upheld Caulton’s conviction.

Caulton, 30, of East Auburndale Avenue, is serving 18 years to life in the Trumbull Correctional Institution for killing Jones, 31, of Ravenwood Avenue.

The 7th District Court in Youngstown rejected Caulton’s claim that visiting Judge Thomas P. Curran of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court erred by not instructing the jury that convicted Caulton concerning the lesser offense of voluntary manslaughter.

Safety concerns

YOUNGSTOWN

Accessibility arrangements for handicapped main public-library patrons have had to be changed due to safety concerns at the regular entrance steps that are now under repair. Because of those concerns, handicapped people can no longer use the elevator at that entrance to bypass the steps and are asked to call the library at 330-744-8636 to arrange for alternative access at a barrier-free employee entrance. Non-handicapped patrons will continue to use the Wick Avenue entrance and climb the steps there for the next three weeks.

Boy will have trial

NEW CASTLE, Pa. (AP)

After more than three years in custody, a western Pennsylvania boy charged with killing his father’s pregnant fianc e and her unborn child will have a trial next week. Lawrence County Judge John Hodge ruled after a hearing Tuesday that Jordan Brown, now 14, of Wampum, Pa., will remain in custody until his juvenile-court trial Tuesday.

Brown’s lawyers argued that he had been held too long in a juvenile detention center without a bond hearing or a trial, and should be released. Relatives of the victim opposed any pretrial release. Disagreement over whether the case should be in the adult or juvenile court system and whether court proceedings should be open to the public have occupied the case since Brown was charged in 2009.
