U.S. Route 422 bridge closed indefinitely

NEW CASTLE, PA.

The bridge that carries westbound U.S. Route 422 over the Shenango River in Taylor Township is closed until further notice, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation said.

Painting crews found cracking in one of the bridge support beams. The bridge was closed immediately Tuesday until repairs are finished, PennDOT said. The eastbound bridge, which is a different structure, is not affected.

Westbound traffic is detoured to Pa. Route 168, then north through New Castle to U.S. Route 224 to Business Route 422. A long-term detour will be established using Business Route 422. Motorists are advised to use caution and expect delays.
