Alabama club starts ‘Food Stamp Friday’ promotion
MONTGOMERY, Ala.
A nightclub in Alabama’s capital city has come up with a unique theme night involving food support for needy families.
The Rose Supper Club in Montgomery will start “Food Stamp Friday” theme nights this month.
Clubbers who present a “food stamp card” will pay just a $5 cover charge.
Manager Harman Wilson says the night is meant to complement the club’s other theme nights, such as Fat Tuesday, Karaoke Wednesday or Thirsty Thursday.
Wilson says patrons will not be able to use their food stamps to buy alcoholic beverages.
He says he hopes the novel approach will draw people to the club.
Human Resources Department spokesman Barry Sparks says the department does not approve of the promotion.
He says food-assistance benefits are meant to provide nourishment for hungry families.
German city spared disruption over suspected WWII bomb
BERLIN
German authorities have scrapped plans to cordon off part of the city of Stuttgart and shut its main station after discovering that a suspected World War II bomb actually was an old water pipe.
Officials had announced that the station, a major railway hub, would be shut for several hours on a recent Sunday while experts defused the bomb, found in a nearby park.
But city police said experts — on closer examination — had determined the object actually was a cast-iron pipe that wasn’t marked on any map.
That meant authorities no longer needed to evacuate a 355-yard radius around the site or ask local residents to leave.
Unexploded World War II bombs still are found frequently in Germany, sometimes leading to large-scale evacuations as a precaution.
Men arrested after deputy finds calf in back seat
CARLSBAD, N.M.
New Mexico authorities have arrested three men found with a 220-pound calf in the back seat of their car.
The Carlsbad Current Argus reports that the men are accused of cattle rustling.
They were jailed on charges of suspicion of larceny of livestock, conspiracy, lack of a bill of sale and exporting livestock.
Luna County sheriff’s office says a deputy pulled over their Honda Civic recently and saw the animal sharing the back seat with one of the suspected thieves.
The three are being held at the Luna County Detention Center.
