Utility-bill changes

Utility-bill changes

NILES

Starting this month, residents will notice that their water, sewer and electric bills will look significantly different. The city is launching its new utility and financial software — replacing a system that has been in place since 1992.

Tom Telego, billing office manager, said the new bills will be more detailed with additions such as a consumption chart to compare usage with the previous month.

He also announced the city is ending its practice of mailing separate notices for delinquent accounts. Instead, shut-off notices will be mailed as a red bill with a warning that service will be discontinued if there is no payment after the due date.

The city also has advised residents who make third-party payments through banks to update their account numbers because the previous account numbers will change with the new billing system.

Tax extension

new castle, pa.

Lawrence County Treasurer Richard L. Rapone is extending the due date for paying county real- estate taxes at the discount amount.

The last day to pay county taxes at the discount rate is May 4. Taxes postmarked by May 4 also will be accepted.

Students sought to work polls

MERCER, PA.

Mercer County Bureau of Elections again is looking for students interested in gaining a real-life lesson in civics by serving as a student poll worker for the county.

Students would be required to attend a two-hour training session two weeks before the April 24 primary. They are then sworn in on Election Day along with the adult poll workers and can perform any election work asked of them by the precinct’s Judge of Elections.

Because they aren’t paid, students have the option of working a full or partial day.

A school administrator or government teacher from each district interested in having their students participate should contact Director of Elections Jeff Greenburg at 724-662-7542 or by email at jgreenburg@mcc.co.mercer.pa.us.
