SENIOR SIDELIGHTS
AARP Driver Safety Program, co-sponsored by the Austintown Senior Center and the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Senior Services Unit, will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 14 at the senior center, 100 Westchester Drive, Austintown. A certified instructor will teach the course, which will provide senior defensive driving strategies. The cost is $12 for AARP members, and $14 for nonmembers. A light lunch will be available. Austintown Senior Center, 100 Westchester Drive, has planned the following: Monday, Walking Club at 9 a.m., blood pressure checks and painting class ($5) at 9:30, bingo and “Ask the Social Worker” at 10 and Let’s Do Lunch (sign up at the center) and Food, Fitness and Fun (a six-week course) at noon; Tuesday, Vets Helping Vets and line dancing at 10 a.m., bridge club at 10:30, bingo at noon, backyard garden planner at 1 p.m., beginner computer class at 3 and intermediate computer class at 4; Wednesday, Walking Club and open exercise/cornhole/pingpong/pool at 9 a.m., bingo at 10, and lunch at noon at Eat’n Park, followed by a matinee, “The Passion,” at the center at 1:45; Thursday, Jump Stretch at 9 a.m., yoga at 9:30, beginning crochet at 10:30, and bingo and open computer lab at noon; and Friday, Walking Club at 9 a.m., bingo and discussion group at 10 and open exercise/Wii bass fishing at noon. Easter Seals Private Duty will provide health assessments to seniors in Mahoning County ages 60 and over, but anyone is welcome. A nurse will provide screenings for blood pressure, pulse, oxygen saturation and weight. The following are scheduled: 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Monday, April 9, April 16 and April 30 at the Austintown Senior Center, 100 Westchester Drive; 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday at East Library; 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the West Library; 1 to 2 p.m. April 11 at Newport Library; and 10 a.m. to noon April 26 at the Main Library.
Woodlands Assisted Living, 1525 E. Western Reserve Road, Poland, will have a senior Health & Wellness Fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 20. The public is invited to this free event. Among the offerings will be screenings, fitness experts, dietitians and many more vendors. The goal is to provide resources and health information to the seniors of the community.
