YOUNGSTOWN

Humility of Mary Heath Partners has received a five-year, $1.1 million grant to train primary-care doctors.

The funding to train the doctors at the Family Medicine Residency Program at St. Elizabeth Health Center came from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration.

During the next five years, the St. E’s Residency Program will expand the family medicine resident training.

It will include patient-centered medical home care, cultural competency, health literacy and team-based interdisciplinary care.

A hospital spokeswoman said Wednesday that she was unsure whether the grant will be used toward additional staff.

The project will be overseen by Dr. Rudolph Krafft, director of the family-medicine residency program, who helped apply for the grant.

“This grant will enable us to strengthen our current program for family-medicine residents,” Dr. Kraftt said in a release.

“Methods for delivering health care to individuals and the overall population are changing across the nation.

“This grant will support our efforts to ensure that residents going through the St. Elizabeth program are knowledgeable in both the clinical and personal aspects of caring for their patients and their community.”

Funding approved for the project is spread out during the next five years.

HHMP will receive $196,643 this year; $220,789 in 2012; $225,960 in 2013; $231,260 in 2014; and $236,696 in 2015.

Funding for years 2012 to 2105 is contingent upon satisfactory progress of the project.
