BOARDMAN

Township trustees approved conditional offers of employment Wednesday for two police officers.

Nick Antonucci, 23, of Boardman, and David Sheely, 23, of Mineral Ridge, accepted the offers and officially will become township employees pending psychological, physical and drug testing, per township policy.

The starting salary for a township police officer is $16 per hour, or about $33,000 annually, plus benefits.

Trustee Brad Calhoun said an interview for a third new police officer is scheduled in October.

In August, trustees approved the hiring of the three new police officers. Two are slated to begin work this fall and the third in January.

Also at the meeting, Police Chief Jack Nichols said the department was denied a federal Community-Oriented Policing Services (COPS) grant this week, but added if grant recipients chose not to take the COPS grant, Boardman is still in consideration.

Road Superintendent Larry Wilson announced that the township received a $10,000 grant from the Mahoning County Green Team for leaf pick-up.

This year, leaf service will be expanded from two weeks to five, thanks to the grant, Wilson said.

The leaf program begins Oct. 17 and will end Nov. 18.

Residents should visit the township’s website, www.Boardmantwp.com, to learn when their street is scheduled for pick-up, Wilson said.

The road department is asking that all leaves be placed in a recyclable brown paper leaf bags available at local retailers, and Wilson said the road department no longer sells the paper bags.

Questions about the program should be directed to the department at 330-726-4190.

The trustees will gather at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 12 for a regular meeting and at 1 p.m. Oct. 17 for a retreat.
