Board of health to give flu shots

POLAND

The Mahoning County District Board of Health will administer flu shots and the nasal-spray flu vaccine from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. today at the Poland Township Administration Building, 3339 Dobbins Road.

The cost for the regular flu shot or the nasal-spray flu vaccine is $25.

The high-dose flu vaccine is also available for those 65 years and older.

Those on traditional Medicare must bring their Medicare card so the cost of the shot can be billed.

Those on Medicaid need to bring their Medicaid card.

No appointment is necessary.

Flu shots planned at senior center

NILES

Flu shots for those age 6 months to 18 years will be administered from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Oct. 14 at Niles Senior Citizen Center, 14 E. State St. in Niles.

No appointment is needed.

The cost is $3. There is no charge for those on Medicaid or those without health insurance.

Community center to host flu clinic

YOUNGSTOWN

The Jewish Community Center and the Youngstown City Health Department will host a flu clinic from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday at the community center, 505 Gypsy Lane.

This flu vaccine will be administered through injection.

There will be no nasal mist available at this clinic.

H1N1 vaccine is included in the seasonal shot this year.

Recipients must be 6 months and older.

If a child is 9 and under and is receiving the flu shot for the first time, he or she will need a second dose in November.

The cost is $15.

Medicare B will be accepted with a valid card.

Volunteers to host pancake breakfast

POLAND

Hospice of the Valley’s volunteers are sponsoring a pancake breakfast from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday at St. Charles Catholic Church in Boardman.

Cost of the meal is $5 for adults and $3 for children 5 to 12 years old.

Tickets may be purchased from any HOV volunteer or at the door.

Proceeds benefit various HOV volunteer projects.

School of nursing to host open house

SHARON, PA.

Sharon Regional Health System’s School of Nursing will host an open house from 1 to 3 p.m. Oct. 8 at the school, 740 E. State St.

Prospective students and their families can meet instructors, current students, learn about financial aid and tour the school.

The school offers a 16-month diploma program.

The next open class starts in August 2012.

Fundraising walk

YOUNGSTOWN

The second annual Mahoning Valley Darkness Community Walk fundraising walk supporting the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention will take place Oct. 8.

The walk is one of about 250 nationwide that expect to unite more than 60,000 walkers and raise $4 million for suicide prevention efforts.

The Mahoning Valley community walk will begin at Mill Creek Park in Youngstown.

Registration begins at 9 a.m. at the Wick Recreation Area.

Opening ceremonies begin at 10 a.m.
