Retired Nurses Interest Group will meet at Western Reserve United Methodist Church in Canfield, 4565 Canfield Road, at 1 p.m. today. WKBN-TV weatherman Rich Morgan will be the guest speaker.

DAR chapter meets at A La Cart

CANFIELD

The Mahoning Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution met Sept. 12 at A La Cart Catering.

New officers are Mary Altiere, regent; Mildred Lumley, vice regent; Priscilla Sutton, chaplain; Rolayne Kasmer, recording secretary; Barbara Parker, corresponding secretary; Frances Stoner, treasurer; Nancy Lewis, registrar; Bonnie Sue Casto, historian/librarian and pro-tem parliamentarian; and Sarah Reynolds, Mary Lou Shively and Carol Tallman, directors.

The chapter will participate in the Boardman Oktoberfest and Canfield High School’s craft show.

Maintenance of the DAR Rock on Market Street will become a conservation project with flower planting. Other programs to be presented this year are “Life in the Western Reserve,” “Introduction to Genealogical Research,” “Abigail Adams” and “Women’s Safety with ID Protection.

4-H scrapbooking club seeking new members

CORTLAND

The Trumbull County 4-H program has a youth club focused on teaching how to scrapbook and is looking for new youth to join.

The scrapbooking project is designed to help youth learn the fundamentals of preserving photo memories while creating their own scrapbooks. Youth will be involved in hands-on activities led by screened, skilled, caring adult volunteers.

Ohio 4-H is a volunteer-led program for youth ages 5 to 18. Cortland Memory Books 4-H Club is led by two adult volunteers and is open to youth between 8 and 18 (8-year-olds must be in third grade by Jan. 1, 2012).

Meetings are from 5 to 6:30 p.m. every other Monday with an optional all-day Saturday every other month. The next meeting is Oct. 3. Some items handy to have are card stock, pattern paper, 12-inch trimmer and adhesives.

Firearm demonstration to honor Civil War

JACKSON CENTER, Pa.

Western Pennsylvania Civil War Re-enactors Society, in conjunction with Jackson Field & Stream Club, will host a Civil War “Live Fire” demonstration at the Jackson Center facility, Cranberry Road, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 8.

In honor of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, Mercer County Historical Society and the 10th Pennsylvania Reserve Infantry Company “G” will demonstrate the use and tactics of the Civil War .58 caliber rifled musket. Civil War soldier re-enactors in uniform will demonstrate the firearms used in that war and the devastating effects of a regimental battle line. The event is free and open to the public.

Preseason ski party Oct. 19 at McMenamy’s

A preseason ski party sponsored by Good Times Ski & Snowboard Club is set for 6 p.m. Oct. 19 at McMenamy’s Restaurant and Banquet Center, 325 Youngstown-Warren Road, Niles. Many area ski resorts will be in attendance. Prizes will be awarded.
