Gov. John Kasich on Monday appointed Ohio’s former elections chief to a spot on the board that oversees repairs and improvements to the state’s museums, historical buildings and sports stadiums.

The Republican governor named former Democratic secretary of state and one-time U.S. Senate hopeful Jennifer Brunner to the Ohio Cultural Facilities Commission.

Brunner preceded current Secretary of State Jon Husted and was defeated in the 2010 Democratic primary where she ran for former-U.S. Sen. George Voinovich’s vacant seat after his retirement.

She is currently leading the effort to repeal Ohio’s recently approved elections overhaul, which shortens the state’s early voting period and bans in-person early voting on Sundays.
