Apple Butter Stir planned in Deerfield

Deerfield’s 36th Apple Butter Stir is set for dawn to dusk Oct. 8 at Deerfield American Legion Grounds, 1357 state Route 14, about one-quarter mile northwest of Deerfield Circle.

Johnny Appleseed will roam the grounds with treats for kids and will pose for pictures.

Free blood-pressure checks will be available from Deerfield Fire Department personnel, a vintage/antique car/truck show will take place throughout the day, and a pancake breakfast will be served beginning at 7 a.m.

Arts, crafts and flea market vendors will be set up beginning around 8 a.m., Deerfield Historical Society will have a display, and Deerfield Quilters will demonstrate their craft and a handmade quilt that will be raffled at 6 p.m.

The final batch of apple butter will begin cooking in a real copper kettle over an open flame at 10 a.m., and lots of volunteers are needed to help stir throughout the day.

The outdoor kitchen will feature homemade bean soup and beef stew, homemade breads and cornbreads and hot dogs with a variety of toppings. Hot sausage sandwiches, apple fritters, a variety of desserts and beverages and apple butter also will be sold.

Entertainment groups willing to volunteer their talents for about a 45-minute presentation beginning around 11 a.m. are being sought. Contact Bill Westover at 330-654-2199.

Organized children’s games will take place in the afternoon, and the final batch of apple butter will be canned at 5 p.m., followed by the raffles at 6.

The day is sponsored by Deerfield Civic Association, and proceeds are used to benefit and enhance the community.

The association meets the fourth Wednesday of most months. Dues are $1 per year and membership is open to anyone wanting to improve Deerfield.

Volunteers are needed to help clean and peel apples at the American Legion on Friday and Oct. 7, starting around 8 a.m., to can Saturday around 3 p.m., and to set up for the one-day stir, from dawn to dusk Oct. 8.
