The city will have a public meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday to explain how to apply for Community Housing Improvement Program grants.

The meeting will be at the municipal building, 351 Tenney Ave.

The city has $500,000 available in the program this year.

The city will explain what the money can be used for and income requirements. Applications will be available.

Shale information

COITSVILLE

A town-hall informational meeting regarding Marcellus and Utica Shale drilling and leasing will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the Brownstone Court Banquet Hall, 50 Struthers- Coitsville Road.

The meeting will focus on landowner advocacy and will cover information relating to oil and gas drilling in Mahoning County, the leasing process, legal obligations on current leases, and protective lease terms for landowners.

The meeting is free.

Produce giveaway

WARREN

The Warren Family Mission will conduct a free produce giveaway at 10 a.m. Friday at its 371 Elm Road Northeast location. More than 300 families were served by the last produce giveaway.

Those receiving produce are asked to bring their own boxes and bags. The produce is provided by Second Harvest Foodbank in Youngstown.

Park ribbon-cutting

LEAVITTSBURG

The Trumbull County MetroParks Board invites the public to attend a ribbon-cutting at 11 a.m. Oct. 7 at the Thomas A. Swift MetroPark, 764 Benedict-Leavittsburg Road.

The event will mark the opening of the new park, which will provide canoeing and kayaking opportunities as well as a location for walking and birding.

The park land was obtained through funding from the Ohio Department of Transportation.

Annual pet blessing

Holy Family Church will have its annual ”St. Francis of Assisi” pet blessing at 3 p.m. Oct. 2. All pet owners are encouraged to bring their pets to the church at 2729 Center Road (U.S. Route 224).

Parenting sessions to start next week

YOUNGSTOWN

Warriors Inc. will have weekly early-childhood parenting sessions from 5:45 to 7:45 p.m. beginning Oct. 6 at Warrior’s Inc./Eagle’s Christian Preschool, 2733 Market. St.

In the 14 free sessions, participants will learn about preschool ages and stages, why play is more than just having fun, how praise and rewards improve behavior, promoting school readiness and more.

Baby-sitting is available, and a light supper with be provided.

‘Learn to Swim’ clinic

YOUNGSTOWN

The Youngstown State Women’s Swimming and Diving team will offer a “Learn to Swim” clinic for children ages 3 to 10 during three Sunday and Wednesday evenings this fall. The student-athletes will host a total of six sessions.

The clinic is open to the public. The remaining lessons will be at YSU’s natatorium in Beeghly Center on the following days: Wednesday, Sunday, Oct. 5, Oct. 9 and Oct. 12 from 6 to 6:45 p.m.

The cost is $60 per child, with five separate skill levels to benefit all participants. All profits raised benefit the YSU swimming and diving program.

All participants will receive a free YSU spirit item and focused swim instructions from knowledgeable swimmers. Participants need to bring appropriate swimming attire, a towel and goggles (if preferred).
