The traditional blessing of animals celebrates the life of St. Francis of Assisi, whose feast day is Oct. 4. St. Francis is known for his love of all creatures.

Keelings in concert

The Keelings Family, southern Gospel singers of Hadley, Pa., will be in concert at 6 p.m. Oct. 2 at Zion Hill Church of the Brethren 14550 New Buffalo Road.

He graduated from Bethel Theological Seminary in Minnesota. He and his wife, Laurel, led a home-schooling cooperative, The Arbor. They home-schooled their seven children.

Blessing of animals

A blessing of the animals and choral evensong will take place at 4 p.m. Sunday at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 323 Wick Ave., in honor of the Oct. 4 feast of St. Francis of Assisi, patron of animals.

Those attending may bring their leashed pets or pets in carriers, stuffed animals and photos of pets.

Light refreshments (for both human and animal companions) will be served.

Annual fall tea

175th anniversary

On Oct. 2, members of Christ Episcopal Church, 2627 Atlantic St., will celebrate the 175th anniversary of its founding.

The celebration will begin at 3:30 p.m. with a history and grounds tour showcasing the church, gardens and church artifacts.

There will be a choral evensong service at 5 followed by a garden reception with entertainment by The Garrettones, a 22-two piece band that will play swing, polkas and 1940s and ‘50s hit parade.

The Right Rev. William Persell of the Episcopal Diocese of Ohio will attend with the Rev. Jeff Baker officiating.

Choirs from other Episcopal churches in the area also will participate.

Ushering class

The first class in Youngstown of the George T. Grier School of Ushering began in October of 2010 at Union Baptist Church. Fifteen churches are involved in the organization from which 47 students completed 32 hours of instruction and graduated on Aug. 21.

The 2011 class will begin Oct. 1 at New Bethel Baptist Church, 1507 Hillman St. Classes take place from 10 a.m. to noon twice a month on Saturdays. Every usher who is trained will be able to usher in various churches and as a gropup at other functions.

Church ushering is an important duty in the church to keep order. Signals are used as a silent means of communication.

King’s Kids Club

The King’s Kids Club of Church Hill United Methodist Church, 189 Church Hill-Hubbard Road, will begin the fall semester from 4:45 to 7 p.m. Wednesday with the theme “There is Great Power in God’s Love.”

The free program is geared to children from preschool through sixth grade and features Bible study, crafts, music and dinner.

Ancient rituals

The Rev. Andrew Gromm, pastor of St.Michael Orthodox Church, 127 Steel St., conducts a weekly lesson at 6 p.m. Thursdays on ancient rituals of the church. The same lesson is offered at 4 p.m. Fridays.

Lessons will focus on the liturgy’s origins from the first to fourth centuries, but also beyond this era.

Father Gromm also preaches the Gospel and church history at noon Saturdays on WSOM, AM 600 on the show, “On Earth As In Heaven.

Benefit concert

A benefit concert is planned at 7 p.m. Oct.13 in William W. Orr Auditorium at Westminster College for New Wilmington Mission Conference’s Anderson Amphitheater.

Building 429 and Leeland, Dove Award-winning bands, will perform on the Sounds of Hope tour with Royal Tailor.
