Joe Maroni, the new seventh- and eighth-grade principal at Canfield Village Middle School, is looking forward to the 2011-12 school year and the changes it will bring.

“My motto for this year is ‘Change is a process — not an event.’ The 2011-12 school year is a going to be a year of change at CVMS — a new principal, new schedule, new teachers, etc. We will work very hard to make it a great school year for our students. I look forward to working with the staff, students and families of Canfield Village Middle School this year and for many years to come,” Maroni said.

According to Maroni, the position was an ideal situation for him with his level of experience.

“Canfield Local Schools has always had the reputation of being one of the top school districts in the area. I was very fortunate to spend the last eight years working in the Boardman Schools as an assistant principal, but when this opportunity presented itself, I couldn’t pass it up,” he explained.

“I’ve spent the majority of my career in education at the middle school level, so Canfield Village Middle School was the ideal situation for me to move into.”

Maroni taught seventh- and eighth- grade social studies for 10 years at Poland Middle School, then moved to Southeast Intermediate School, grades 3-4-5, as principal for one year. Most recently, he was assistant principal at Boardman Center Middle School for eight years.

Maroni is a 1987 Boardman High School graduate and attended Youngstown State University, graduating with a bachelor’s in Education in 1991 and a master’s in Educational Administration in 1996. He received his Pre-K through Grade 9 Principal’s Licensure from Ashland University in 2000.

Maroni has both short- and long-term goals for Canfield Village Middle School and the students and staff.

His short-term goals include implementing a new schedule and developing a positive rapport with students, parents and staff.

His long-term goals include maintaining high levels of achievement, working to continuously improve school curriculum and programs and provide the best educational experiences for the students.

Maroni was motivated to go into education by his father and former teachers.

“My dad was a teacher and I spent a lot of time around school with him when I was younger, so that was a factor. More importantly, I had really good teachers that had a positive impact on me throughout my school years. I wanted to give back to others what those teachers did for me,” Maroni said.
