Police probe robbery

YOUNGSTOWN

Police are trying to determine who hit a 66-year-old man over the head and robbed him of more than $900 this week.

The man told police he arrived at his Brownlee Avenue home about 1:19 a.m. Tuesday from Mountaineer Racetrack when someone jumped him from behind in his driveway, knocking him unconscious. The thieves took $910 from the unconscious man’s pockets.

Reports say the man’s eye was swollen shut, and a substantial lump was behind his left ear. He told police he did not see the attacker.

Student appointed

Gov. John R. Kasich announced the appointment of a Youngstown man to serve as the student member on the Youngstown State University Board of Trustees.

Joshua Michael Prest’s term started Tuesday and ends April 30, 2013.

Feeders to be cleaned

Residents can have their bird feeders cleaned and sanitized Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Wild Birds Unlimited Nature Shop, 90 Boardman-Canfield Road, during the Audubon Society of Mahoning Valley’s semi-annual fundraiser.

The cost for the cleaning is $3. Refreshments will be available.

Friends of the Poor walks are planned

Friends of the Poor walks will take place from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at two locations in the Mahoning Valley.

In Struthers, walkers will meet at St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church parking lot, 764 Fifth St. They will walk south on Fifth Street, east on Wilson Street and north on Garfield Street, ending at the church hall.

In Youngstown, the walk will begin at St. Vincent de Paul food pantry on Via Mount Carmel, to Watt Street, to Commerce then to West Front Street, where the dining hall is located.

The walks are part of a national program coordinated by the national St. Vincent de Paul Society. For information, call St. Nicholas at 330-755-9819.

Monetary donations will be accepted.

Since January, the St. Nicholas Council of St. Vincent de Paul Society has disbursed more than $6,000 for rent, food, utilities and clothing to those in need. Funds raised by the church council remain in the Struthers area to help families.

Woman reports having gun held to her head

YOUNGSTOWN

Youngstown police are looking for a 33-year-old Sharon man after his 37-year-old girlfriend told police the man entered her South Side apartment and held a gun to her head before firing a shot.

The woman told police she has a restraining order against the man, but he used a key to come into her home while she was sleeping Tuesday afternoon and held a gun to her head. She said she smacked the gun away and the weapon fired.

The estranged boyfriend called the woman foul names then left the apartment before police arrived.

Man pleads innocent

WARREN

Shawn W. Roberts, 25, of Union Street Southwest, has pleaded innocent to felonious assault and endangering children for allegedly burning the face of a 9-week-old boy June 27. If convicted of the charges, Roberts could face as many as 16 years in prison. He returns to Trumbull County Common Pleas Court for a pretrial hearing Oct. 12.

Road resurfacing

Township trustees announced the 2011 road resurfacing program earlier this week. Lee Run Road, Coblentz Drive, Katahdin Drive and Bendemeer Way are slated for paving beginning next week. Trustees awarded the contract to the Gennaro Pavers of Lowellville for $41,342. Gennaro Paving had the lowest bids of the six companies that submitted bids.

Meeting about grants

The city will have a public meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday to explain how to apply for Community Housing Improvement Program grants.

The meeting will be at the city building, 6 Elm St.

The city has $500,000 available in the program this year.

The city will explain what the money can be used for and income requirements. Applications will be available.
